Large Portraits

These large portraits feature Derek's friends in a variety of situations. The largest painting, "The Anatomy Lesson of a Jumbling Tower," utilizes the compositional structure of Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp." However, he swapped the corpse that was being dissected for a tower of wooden blocks that are being carefully restacked. The precariously arranged blocks refer to the delicate bonds of friendship.
